Who Were The Scholastics? Faith, Reason, And The Schoolmen

What were the scholastics really trying to do?

In this video, we explore the medieval theologians known as the schoolmen—men like Anselm, Peter Lombard, and Thomas Aquinas—who sought to think carefully about the relationship between faith and reason.

Were they simply overly academic, or did they help the church clarify its doctrine in important ways?

We’ll answer three key questions:

Who were the scholastics?

What was scholasticism?

And how should we think about them today?

Our aim is to learn from the past so that we may better serve the church in the present.

I have served as the Pastor of Preaching at Grace Fellowship Church in Albion, Southeastern Illinois, for the past eight years. Grace Fellowship is a Reformed Baptist congregation holding to the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith. I remain humbled and thankful to my risen Lord for calling me to the ministry of the Word and entrusting me with the high privilege of pastoral service. I love the flock the Lord has given to my fellow Elders and I.
